Online Botanical Watercolor Workshop: Roses
Tuesdays 10am - 12pm (Pacific Time)
March 18 to April 29
(7 weeks)
We will be using Zoom for this class. About 10 minutes before class each week, you will receive an email from me with a link to join the class on Zoom. Classes are recorded so if you miss a class you will still be able to watch the lesson. Video tutorials will be available to students for a year.
Each of the lessons will introduce new exercises and watercolor techniques. You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting.
Week 1 Watercolor Techniques
Week 2 Color Mixing, Color Matching, More Watercolor Techniques
Week 3 Practice Rose
Week 4 & 5 First Rose Painting
Week 6 & 7 Second Rose Painting
For our first two weeks, we will be practicing watercolor techniques and color mixing so it would be good to have a watercolor paper sketchbook such as the Pentalic 8.5" x 11" Aqua Journal (cold press paper) (https://amzn.to/48UR4Uy) or the Stillman & Birn Zeta Series Hardbound Sketchbook (hot press paper) (https://amzn.to/3AQRDlP) or the Stillman & Birn Beta Series Hardbound Sketchbook (cold press paper) (https://amzn.to/40UhZxP). You choose if you prefer to use hot press or cold press watercolor paper. I will be using cold press.
As always, you don’t need to have my exact colors or brushes. If you decide to use different brands and or different colors, you are free to do so. If you are trying to get results similar to mine, you might have to play with your color mixing to figure out which of your colors come close. But please keep in mind, this workshop is more about techniques than about duplicating as closely as possible my color choices. Below is the list of supplies I used for the projects in this workshop. Feel free to use your favorite supplies if you prefer.
Pencil (2H or lighter is best) and kneaded eraser
Watercolor Paper
Our first rose can be done in a watercolor sketchbook, second and third roses should be done on Arches watercolor sheets. My paintings are done as 20 x 24 inches (50.8 × 60.96 cm.) on 300 lbs Cold Press paper. You could use 140 lbs Cold Press if you prefer. If you want to paint smaller you can but the bigger you are willing to paint, the more room you will have to learn and practice color mixing and techniques. And the more eye catching your finished painting will be!
Watercolor Brushes
You should have a variety of watercolor round brushes and scrubber brushes. Below are the brushes I used:
Black Gold 311, Round, Size 000 and Size 2
Princeton Heritage 4050, Round, Size 2 and Size 6
Creative Mark Micro Mini, Pointed Round, 10/0
