Drawing is the foundation of the visual arts and anyone can learn to draw! This class will build a solid foundation of drawing skills to strengthen your ability to express your creativity!

Copying old masters' drawings is a time-tested discipline. The experience of copying from master artists, not only exposes students to classical drawing techniques, but also to the masters' thinking process. You can also learn how the artist developed an idea from beginning to end. To reap this benefit, however, you can't just engage in mindless copying.

In this drawing class we will explore why the artist did this or that, and why it works. If you can pinpoint specific strategies used in the drawings, then you can transfer these techniques to your own drawings. It's a fun way to learn about Leonardo da Vinci and to improve your own drawing skills.

This workshop is based on the book Botanical Art Techniques by the American Society of Botanical Artists.

This definitive guide outlines major technique of botanical artistry, starting with a chapter on graphite art. This workshop will move from introductory to advanced—so any level of artist can build on acquired skills.

We will look at basics of using graphite pencils such as line control, line weight, values, creating form and finally draw flowers, leaves and fruit.

This workshop is the first in a series I will teach all year long as we explore the rest of this fabulous book on botanical art.

Each of the lessons will introduce new ideas and exercises, and challenge you to think about drawing and botanical art in new ways. You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting.

We will work in sketchbooks, using creative exercises to improve our ability to see and draw. This workshop is based on Gary Faigin’s book The Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expression.

This book is considered the definitive guide to capturing facial expressions. We will study the expressions created by individual facial muscles and focus on six basic human emotions: sadness, anger, joy, fear, disgust, and surprise.

Each of the lessons will introduce new ideas and exercises, and challenge you to think about this tricky subject in new ways.  You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting.

The Artist's Way

THE ARTIST'S WAY 12-WEEK WORKSHOP
CHARLENE COLLINS FREEMAN

March 6 - May 29
(no class on April 17)
Saturdays 3pm - 4:30pm (Pacific Time)

$225

For more more information and to register, click here.

I have taught drawing, watercolors and sketchbook class to hundreds of students from 4 to 92 years old. I often find myself referring to The Artist's Way in response to the challenges my students share with me. These challenges are creative obstacles that have less to do with technique and more to do with giving ourselves permission to find our own voice. Which is really a way of saying, more to do with living authentically.

I first came across this book in the early 1990s, when the only way I could bring myself to look at the possibility of being a full time artist was sideways. Like most people I know who have The Artist's Way on their bookshelves, I only made it through the first few chapters (several times). But luckily I circled back to it over and over again. Eventually I committed to reading it and working through the suggested exercises. It's transformative.

Whether you are brand-new to The Artist’s Way or have a bookshelf filled with years of Morning Pages journals, whether you are working on a large artistic project or simply wishing to experience more creativity in your life, this workshop will help you get in touch with your creativity and develop it.

This workshop is based on The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron which takes students through a 12 week course to explore their inner creativity. The material covered explores ways to tap into our creativity as well as ways to nurture ourselves. The tools of the program are practical, inspiring and approachable. Even if you don't see yourself as an artist, the workshop will help you get in touch with your creativity, your passions, and your dreams for your life. The 12 week workshop follows the 12 chapters of Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Way.

And now, I am facilitating Artist's Way workshops! I'm thrilled and humbled to lead these workshops. Come join me for this inspiring workshop.

The Artist's Way workshop is based on one of the best books written about creativity, Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way.

This workshop is really about how to grab your creative life by the lapels... because sometimes it's hard to know how to even begin... Apologetically? Enthusiastically? Cautiously? What if this... What if that?!

And although the workshop is in the context of being creative, it is really about living a full, passionate and authentic life.

For class you will need a notebook, pen and Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Way.

About watercolor supplies

October 30, 2020 Charlene Freeman

Something I never thought I would say, “I have a YouTube Channel” has been added to the long list of unexpected events in 2020.

In March I started teaching my classes online. I quickly started making videos for my online workshops and created a YouTube channel for them. While my class videos are not available for public viewing (they are just for registered students), I have created and will continue to create videos open to all.

One of the first ones I created is a video about watercolor supplies. I spend a lot of time answering questions about art supplies so I decided to put together this video to cover basic information about watercolor paper, watercolor brushes, palettes, watercolor paints and miscellaneous studio supplies I use all the time.

If you want to check out my channel, you can find it here.

To see the video about watercolor supplies, visit https://youtu.be/70BL589bniU
