Tuesdays 9:30am - 12:30pm

September 12 - October 31, 2017

You do not need to have taken Part I of this course to take Part II.

Part I of this workshop was designed to help watercolor artists understand both color theory and paint properties. In that course, we explored color theories and the properties of watercolor pigments, and we experimented with color temperature, value, and intensity of pigments. We focused on the advantages of learning how to paint with a limited palette and we made a lot of color charts in the process.

In Part II, we will learn formulas that work well for specific subjects (skies, skin, shadows) and we will learn how to mix a variety of colors (combinations for creating greys, dark blacks, a variety of greens, etc.). We will explore how to match colors, and we will look at different ways of mixing color (on the palette, on the paper, wet-into-wet, glazing). We will learn how to create compatible palettes (colors that work well together in a painting) and we will look at the emotions of colors.

Each of the lessons of our workshop will introduce new ideas and exercises, new paints, techniques, and challenge you to think about color in new ways.  You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting, where experimentation and play are encouraged while techniques and observation are emphasized.
