Debbie Wachel, Handmade Coptic Bound Art Journal

Saturday, December 7

10am -4pm with one hour break for lunch

$115 Supplies included

Come learn to make your own art journal with Debbie Wachel. This book is a true work of art with Japanese Yuzen paper covers and filled with luscious Arches watercolor paper. This beautiful book is approximately 7” x 5”, portrait orientation, and contains 68 pages of 90lb Arches cold press watercolor paper.

You will spend the day learning the essentials of making your own art journals using a 2-needle modified Coptic binding. This exposed binding technique is as durable as it is beautiful and allows the book to open completely flat. Learning the 2-needle coptic stitch is a gateway to learning more complicated exposed bindings. This is more than just a bound journal: it is a true artbook that will be uniquely yours.

We will start with a review of Coptic bound books, bookbinding basics and tool review. The class will follow step-by-step instructions to make the book together.  Supplies and instruction will be available to embellish your wonderful journal if you so desire. The embellishments that can be added are ribbon tie book closure, charms and beads for embellishing the spine of the book, and beads to embellish the front cover stitching. These are optional elements that each student can decide to include if desired.

All materials will be provided and bookbinding tools will be available for use. All you will need to bring to class is your favorite pencil and a small hammer. If you want to use your own tools you can buy the items listed in the bookbinding supply list

During the day we will also discuss book design and how you can use what you learned in this class to make custom designed journals in the exact size and shape you want containing your favorite paper(s). Be warned – bookmaking is additive!

Debbie Wachel is a mixed media artist and bookmaker who has been making books for over fifteen years.

All skill levels are welcome. Completion of the Japanese Stab Binding Book class is helpful but not required.

Limited to 8 students

Please note that the provided photo is for reference only. The book made in class will have different cover papers and embellishments.
